About Us
The LocalBiz idea was developed following a chance meeting in Keighley West Yorkshire of its two founder members, Ian Linnegan and Alan Drew. The idea sounded ‘enterprising’ and, with support from the Learning and Skills Council in Yorkshire and a small grant from the Department of Trade and Industry, LocalBiz Project was born.
The concept of getting groups of young people working together to manage a community website, with suitable school governance, was well received and the project moved forward at a steady pace. Both partners worked on the project part-time whilst continuing full time jobs. Both were very committed to the programme.
The Project covers 5 of the cross-curriculum dimensions mentioned in the left panel.
In July 2009, Justin Whitston came across the Project following a submission made by Ian linnegan to Harrogate based YABA (Yorkshire Association of Business Angels), to help raise funds for further development.
Justin saw the Project's potential and, with his help, the Project's branding was completely overhauled and an exciting new website was created using Web2 technology. Justin's business expertise was key factor in the creation of a sustainable business model that delivers a true 'Enterprise Journey' for students, whilst combining revenue opportunities for participating schools.
September 2011 - LocalBiz is is now in a position to deliver a world class, not-for-profit community service. The final phase seeks to extend it's education umbrella, to develop links with universities or similar organisations. Small enhancements of the current LocalBiz website by undergraduates will also include the development of Skoolbay.co.uk. I am looking to source any universities keen to offer 'real world' software design projects to students and further enhance the Project's business model to deliver a service which can easily go international.
Please contact me if you require any further information. If you could also send this link to any universities, government bodies, or individuals that you you think should get involved, it would be most appreciated.
